The Future: Woodless Wood Polymer Composites (WPCs) With Specialty Minerals Talcs

Wood polymer composites (WPCs) have exhibited incredible growth rates as their benefits as alternative decking materials become better known to builders and homeowners. The potential to reduce upkeep while maintaining a new, finished appearance for long periods of time has allowed this revolutionary class of building materials to sustain such growth while commanding a price premium over conventional treated wood.

WPCs composites typically appear in three forms, differentiated by the polymer base in use. These forms are PE composites, PP composites and PVC composites.

Although current WPC technology has come a long way in delivering the value proposition of a reduced maintenance and carefree decking experience, some problems remain. A few of these are:

  • heavy weight compared to real treated wood
  • mold growth potential
  • splitting and delamination
  • specific fastener requirements
  • minimal structural capabilities

Many of these problems arise because the key filler in WPC wood flour, exhibits several limitations as an extender-filler additive. It provides no reinforcement to the composite and is bio-active, which makes it susceptible to decay and mold growth. It promotes water absorption by the composite, which among other things leaves the composite vulnerable to freeze-thaw damage.

The industry is beginning to pioneer a new technology to develop a wood polymere composite without wood.

Specialty Minerals Talc For Non-Wood Flour (WPC)
Talcron® MP 45-26 talc is a highly recommended filler for low-density polyolefin matrix composites. These composites will contain no biodegradable or bioactive filler and will have a density comparable to natural treated wood. Their nailing and sawing characteristics should closely resemble natural wood, which may improve productivity in deck installation. These composites will also address the increasing cost of wood flour as WPC commercial volume continues to grow.
