Elegant Cosmetics and Toiletries Using Specialty Minerals Talcs

Whether they are buying sophisticated luxury brands, mass market national brands, or custom packaged store brands, today’s purchasers of cosmetics and lotions demand that they be smooth, elegant and effective. The high-quality talcs from Specialty Minerals Inc. (SMI) can help you formulate the kinds of products your customers want.

Using SMI Minerals in Cosmetics and Toiletries
Including a Specialty Minerals talc in your product formulations can contribute excellent properties in use and create the potential for cost reduction.

  • Cosmetics—liquid and powdered: Platy talcs impart a smooth feeling to liquid facial makeups during application. They aid in adhesion of the liquid or the powder to the skin, improve covering power, and help reduce shine by absorbing skin oils. Talc’s small particle size can extend the more expensive white and color pigments, and when used as a filler or solid diluent, can reduce cost. SMI talcs can be used in:
    • Liquid foundations, concealers, blushes, rouges and bronzing gels
    • Pressed face powders, eye shadows, blushes, foundations, eyebrow colors and eyeliners
    • Loose face powders, blushes, bronzers, and rouges
  • Creams and Lotions—face, hand and body creams and lotions: talc’s slippery nature adds a lovely texture to a cream which spreads easily.
  • Solid stick deodorants—Talc is an inert filler, essentially the solid equivalent of the water used as a diluent. Easy gliding application is aided when talc is used. Talc can also carry the fragrance for stick deodorant.
  • Dry shampoos—Talc-based powdered shampoos are for those who cannot wash their hair because of time or disability, with the oleophilic talc absorbing the oils and grime from the hair. Similar products can also be made for pets.

Specialty Minerals Talc Products For Cosmetics
MicroTalc® MP 60-30 and MP 98-30 USP and Bacteria Controlled talcs and UltraTalc® 3000 USP and 4000 USP talcs are 4 to 8 micron fine talcs used in the cosmetic applications. Slightly larger talcs, including the UltraTalc 16 micron USP talc may be best for the dry shampoo formulas.

Both the MicroTalc and UltraTalc families of talcs are certified to meet U.S. Pharmacopeia requirements for chemical and microbiological purity, and the Cosmetic Manufacturers Association (CTFA) limits for arsenic, lead and heavy metals.
