Specialty Minerals Inc.’s (SMI’s) Lifford plant in Birmingham, United Kingdom, manufactures three grades of Sturcal™ precipitated calcium carbonates (PCCs). These can be used in foods, nutritional supplements, antacids and other pharmaceuticals, and personal-care products. Each Sturcal™ PCC is certified to meet the requirements of the European and British Pharmacopeias (EP and BP), and European Union E170i Miscellaneous Food Regulations. On request they can also be certified as meeting USP and Food Chemical Codex (FCC).
The Birmingham plant is registered with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a Drug Manufacturing Facility, and follows Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). Sturcal™ PCC products are certified as Kosher. In addition to being ISO 9001 quality certified, Birmingham also has ISO 140001 environmental certification.
