Three grades of Calopake® precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) are manufactured at the Specialty Minerals Inc. (SMI) Lifford plant in Birmingham, United Kingdom. They are calcites, scalenohedral in particle shape, differing in size and bulk density.
All Calopake® PCCs meet the requirements of the European and British Pharmacopeias (EP and BP) and the EU Miscellaneous Food Regulations, E170i. On request they can be certified for USP and Food Chemicals Codex (FCC) compliance. The SMI Lifford plant is registered as a Drug Manufacturing facility with the U.S. FDA (Food and Drug Administration), and its products are certified as Kosher. Lifford is ISO 9001 quality certified, and follows Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). It has also achieved ISO 14001 environmental certification.
Applications for Calopake® Precipitated Calcium Carbonates (PCCs)
Some uses for Calopake® PCC are:
- Personal-care products, including as an abrasive in toothpastes, and a rubber detackifier and mold release for surgical gloves and condoms.
- Food calcium fortification. Ice cream and frozen yogurt, bulk fermented yogurt, powdered drink mixes, dry coffee creamers.
- Nutritional supplements. Calcium supplements in the forms of effervescent tablets, soft chews, and powdered beverage mixes.
- Pharmaceuticals. Antacid soft chews, antibiotic flocculant, and pH controller.
- Mushroom spawn production. Sprouted spores sold to mushroom farms.
