Barytes, also called barite, is a barium sulfate mineral, BaSO4, used in specialty adhesives and sealants that require its unique properties. These unique properties include:
- High density. Barytes is among the densest minerals, with a specific gravity of 4.3, compared to 2.7 for calcium carbonate. If added weight is wanted in a formulation, barytes is the filler of choice.
- Sound absorbing. Used in sound-deadening coatings or sealants in trunks and on parts of auto bodies to produce quieter interiors.
- Inertness. Improves impermeability, water resistance, and weatherability.
- Heat resistance. For high-temperature applications.
- Radiation absorption. Manufacturing and sealing radiation-producing and -shielding products.
Automotive PVC plastisol and acrylic plastisol sealants are the main use of barytes in adhesives and sealants. Barytes is also used in some hot melt adhesives as well as adhesives for wood.

Specialty Minerals Barites for Adhesives and Sealants
Baricron™ barites are produced using high-quality, bright white ores from China. The Baricron™ barite family includes four products of particle sizes from 1.5 to 8.0 microns. Top size is carefully controlled and the SMI barites disperse easily, resulting in smooth-textured end products.
Processing parameters are tightly monitored with rigorous quality-assurance procedures to ensure that high-quality, consistent products are supplied to customers.
