Velacarb^® precipitated calcium carbonate, an acicular PCC, is a unique mineral filler specifically designed for uncoated mechanical (groundwood) papers such as supercalendered, newsprint and directory grades. Velacarb^® PCC improves sheet opacity, brightness and smoothness while decreasing the air permeability of the paper compared to other typically used PCC filler morphologies. These benefits translate into value for the papermaker in the form of reduced bleaching costs, replacement of more expensive pigments, and improved print quality, i.e., missing dots and print through or strike through.
