Dual Flow® Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) Addition

The Dual Flow® precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) addition process from Specialty Minerals is a method of adding filler PCC to a paper furnish thus producing a better mineral distribution in the finished sheet and reducing interference with fiber-to-fiber bonding. Some of the benefits from this process are:

  • Optimized papermaking process via higher operational efficiency and /or reduced chemical costs
  • Improved paper properties permitting higher levels of fiber substitution or basis weight reductions
  • Reduced dusting
  • Increased PCC retention
  • Reduced pitch and press deposits

The Dual Flow® PCC process is low cost, easy to implement, and uses current precipitated calcium carbonate products. It involves splitting the PCC addition into two separate streams—one in the thick stock (high consistency) and the other in the thin stock (low consistency). The precipitated calcium carbonate added in the thick stock is fixed to the fiber surface through the addition of wet end (cationic) starch with sufficient amount of mixing time. The percentage of the PCC flow going to the thick and thin stock varies from mill to mill and depends on levels of desired paper properties, machine optimization and machine efficiency.
