Specialty Minerals Paper Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) Production Facilities

Specialty Minerals, a division of Minerals Technologies Inc., is a leading supplier of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) to the worldwide paper industry. We first started producing paper PCC in 1936 at our merchant facility in Adams, Massachusetts. In 1986, we constructed our first PCC satellite on-site at a Wisconsin paper mill. Today, Specialty Minerals has more than 50 paper PCC satellites and four merchant plants in over 17 countries around the world. This tremendous growth attests to the uniqueness and value of our satellite program.

Initially, Specialty Minerals installed satellite plants at paper mills that manufactured uncoated freesheet papers.  PCC is used as a filler and fiber substitute in these papers and this is still the largest paper use for precipitated calcium carbonate. Since this initial beginning, we have commissioned satellite plants at a variety of paper mills manufacturing the full range of paper products, from uncoated to coated printing and writing papers to newsprint to paperboard. The worldwide potential for future PCC satellite facilities still remains promising.
