Twenty years ago we set out to commercialize alkaline papermaking in a meaningful way using the precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) satellite concept. We expected the process, technology, and logistics breakthrough to reduce papermaking costs and give papermakers a tool they could use to improve the end-user’s satisfaction. But we never planned to stop there. We developed product portfolios for whiteness, brightness, bulk, and smoothness including AT® PCC for acidic papers and powerful PCC coating minerals. Breakthrough and incremental innovations are possible when precise control of the morphology and mineral platform is part of the company’s culture.
Our product/technology leadership is second to none. At Specialty Minerals Inc. (SMI), we continue to create new products and processes resulting in, for example, filler/fiber substitution at the sub-micron particle level, nanochemistry on the particle surface, and nanocrystalline blended PCC concepts.
