Precipitated Calcium Carbonate’s Impact on Energy Consumption

Perhaps no single issue is as much of a daily drain on papermaking productivity, or as large a concern to mill managers and paper company leadership, as the cost of energy. Depending on age, region, and fuel, a mill’s energy budget can represent up to 20 percent of manufacturing costs. A Specialty Minerals Inc. (SMI) precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) strategy has implications for managing energy use. Our PCC has a direct and adjustable impact on everything from vacuum on the wet-end, to higher speeds through the dryer section, to reduced infrared radiation (IR) or after-dryer energy on the coater. Minerals do matter, and the right minerals strategy has a clear and positive impact on energy consumption.
